A guide to the main characteristics of stainless steel fasteners

A guide to stainless steel fastenersStainless steel is a widely used material for a variety of applications, including fasteners. With this article, we at Gel Giussani will give an overview of the main features of stainless steel fasteners and their main applications.

Introduction to fasteners and stainless steel

Before proceeding, you need to know these two terms: fasteners and stainless steel.

Fasteners are indispensable industrial components, as they join two or more parts in a stable and secure manner. U-bolts, tie rods, rivets, are just a few examples of the most commonly used fasteners in industry.

Stainless steel, on the other hand, is a metal alloy based on iron, carbon and chrome. This last element, in a minimum amount of 10%, creates a thin layer of chromium oxide that prevents the external elements from coming into contact with iron.

In addition, stainless steel may contain variable amounts of other elements such as molybdenum, titanium, copper, niobium and nickel.

Depending on the crystalline structure of the material, we can distinguish different types of stainless steels:

  • Austenitics: the most common, are chromium-nickel alloys with chromium in quantities between 17 and 26% and nickel between 7 and 22% (e.g. AISI 302, 304, 316);
  • Ferritic: 16 to 28% chrome (e.g. AISI 430);
  • Martensic: chrome from approx. 11 to 18% (e.g. AISI 440);
  • Duplex: less well known, they are a combination of austenitics and ferritics (e.g. AISI 2205).

Characteristics of stainless steel fasteners

The main characteristics that make stainless steel fasteners an excellent choice are their corrosion resistance, mechanical strength and durability.

As mentioned earlier, the chromium in stainless steel forms a protective layer of chromium oxide, thus preventing the corrosive action of moisture, chemicals and adverse weather conditions. This characteristic gives the fasteners a pronounced resistance to corrosion, making them ideal for use in environments exposed to chemicals, in the open or in places with high levels of humidity.

In addition to corrosion resistance, stainless steel fasteners are characterised by their remarkable mechanical strength. This quality makes them capable of bearing heavy loads and withstanding various mechanical stresses without yielding. Therefore, they are perfectly suited for applications requiring high tensile strength or robust torsion resistance. As a direct consequence, stainless steel fasteners are reliable and durable in the long term.

Applications of stainless steel fasteners

Applications of stainless steel fastenersDue to their excellent properties, stainless steel fasteners are used in numerous applications:

  • Construction industry: both civil and industrial structures rely on the resistance, corrosion and mechanical strength of stainless steel fasteners to maintain their structural integrity over time.
  • Marine industry: stainless steel fasteners are particularly appreciated in this sector for their excellent resistance to corrosion caused by salt water. Indeed, ships, boats and offshore platforms have always required materials that can withstand the marine environment without degrading, ensuring safety and durability of ship constructions.
  • Automotive: in this sector, stainless steel fasteners are used for a variety of applications, from fixing interior and exterior vehicle components to exhaust systems and engines. Their resistance to high temperatures and corrosion makes them particularly suitable for this sector, where the longevity and strength of parts are crucial for vehicle safety and performance.
  • Petrochemical industry: in this case, the need for corrosion resistant materials is particularly high due to exposure to harsh chemicals and extreme environmental conditions. Stainless steel fasteners are chosen for their ability to withstand these conditions, ensuring the reliability and safety of petrochemical plants, pipes and storage tanks.
